Banking Under Glass
Mar. 16th, 2020 10:38 amMy employment situation continues to evolve...
Oh, first: still employed! (Let's get that out of the way.)
However, due to the Covid19 pandemic, my bank has shut down all branches without the plexiglass shielding separating bank personnel from customers. In the remaining branches (including mine), all personnel have been moved behind the glass until further notice.
Also: split shifts!
Half our employees will work Mon., Tues., Wed. and the other half (that's me) on Thurs., Fri., and Sunday.

A number of NYC officials and community leaders are calling for a citywide lockdown--suspension of all non-essential services.

Date: 2020-03-17 02:19 am (UTC)We may do the shift thing too, is not clear yet. They are still trying to figure out if we qualify as non-essential services. Honestly, I don't see why not. All we need is internet, phone, and laptop, and I've got those.
Anywho...this appears to be working out well for you? You can spend time with your family, keep your job, and work. I honestly don't see them letting you go - from what you've written and told me, they'd have to be insane to do so.
I'd think the banks would go mainly electronic at this point? Brooklyn was odd today, most things were still open. You really couldn't tell there was a pandemic, same with Jamiaca, Queens. But they may all be gearing up for it?

I still feel like crap.
I have this very light chest congestion and cough that won't go away. The pain from my root canal is just beginning to subside.
But mostly, I'm angry. Not for me, mostly; for my son. He's ten years old, and he should be in school, or outside playing with his friends, going to baseball games or the movies, or shopping at the mall with his mom. He shouldn't be trapped inside the house with the animals for weeks at a time because our government was too short sighted, uncaring or just plain stupid to prepare for something like this.
We'll all pull through this. Kids are adaptable. But I'm very unhappy.

Date: 2020-03-17 06:39 pm (UTC)Allergies? Cold? Or something else?
I have an intermittent cough - but that's allergies. And my chest is clear.
I hope yours is just allergies.
But mostly, I'm angry. Not for me, mostly; for my son.
I hear you.
China is a problem. And has been for a long time. SARS came from China, so did MERS, and COVID 19 is part of the same deal. China doesn't have ANY food and drug regulations, environmental regs, etc. And this is a major problem. The movie Contagion - was about getting a contagious flu like disease from China. (This is playing out like Contagion.)
Also, how our country handles health care is a major problem - as evidenced by both the Mayor and the Governor's press conferences.
My niece is turning 16 next month, instead of dating, having picnics, debating, hanging out with her friends - she's quarantined with her parents for a month - using Skype to discuss things. Or Zoom - Zoom kind of works better than Skype. She starts online learning next week. Instead of visiting her grandparents, she's in guarantine. And she's losing friends - many returning to China, and elsewhere.
We're all stuck in a really bad science fiction novel - that requires better writers.
