Great Uncle

My niece just gave birth to a healthy baby boy--Evan James, 7 lbs. 13 oz.

That makes my sister a grandmother, and me a Great Uncle.

I am delighted for my family, and my unease at becoming the elder male of (now) three generations is somehow offset by my love of the title: Great Uncle.

(It just sounds so important and dignified, y'know?)

I am distressed that there are no real role models for great uncles in pop culture and literature. Anybody got one? (The most famous example that comes to mind is Stan Pines from Gravity Falls, and I'm not sure I'm ready for the tattered boxer shorts/red fez/hairy mole look just yet.)

My niece should be home from the hospital today. I look forward to corrupting the child from my position as elder statesman.

Well, Great Uncle doesn't just sound important. It is important... and very dignified! Isn't Uncle Scrooge a great uncle to Huey, Dewey and Louie? There's a great (uncle) role model. Of course, a money bin does make him more popular.

But take it from a fellow great uncle. When grandnieces and grandnephews start having kids, you mostly feel old!

I can't think of any notable "Great Uncles" off the top of my head, though there must be some.
