In the Wilds of Long Island
Jun. 5th, 2021 01:41 pmHi guys. Let's play catch up.
First and most important: Moderna part 1 completed. Part 2 next week. Then my wife and I will be fully vaccinated. D. turns 12 next month; then it's his turn.
I am writing this from the Boy Scout campsite in Wildwood State Park, just outside of Brookhaven on Long Island. It's his first official camping trip as a Boy Scout, and he's having a wonderful time. The troop went out fishing on Long Island Sound this morning, and he caught three porgies for tonight's fish fry....
It's a shame he doesn't like the taste of fish.
As for me, I may be getting too old to enjoy camping. The drive out of Brooklyn was a nightmare (torrential rain), I can't get comfortable sleeping in a tent, and I get lost walking to the bathroom. (I think I'm now one of those people who need to have a bathroom within 40 feet at all times.)
Nevertheless.... we are at the beach. He is wading in the waters of Long Island Sound, digging for shells, building castles. He is happy. What more could I want?
***************
For the first time in a long time. the family ventured into a movie theater to see an actual, brand new to the market motion picture. Raya and the Last Dragon would not have been my first choice for icebreaker, but--as a movie whose message is to hold on to hope even when circumstances seem to call for cynicism--it felt strangely appropriate.
Since there were only six people in the theater (including us), maybe this wasn't the big test of nerve. The big test would be a Marvel movie: Black Widow? Eternals? Shang-Chi?

Date: 2021-06-06 01:08 am (UTC)Your camping story made me smile. I'm not a fan of camping - I like showers, toilets, indoor plumbing and beds. My idea of camping, is a nice cabin, with a nice bed and an indoor shower and toilet. Even my brother's barn with it's floor air mattress, toilet down the steps and outdoor shower is too much for me.
And I hear you - a toilet within a short distance is a good thing.

Wow. I'm fully vaccinated and I'm not willing to go into a movie theater until July or August.
So...July or August.

Date: 2021-06-06 01:48 am (UTC)Lordy, I would kill for a bathroom "down the steps" right now. Do you know how embarrassing it is to get lost on your way back from the bathroom? Thank God nobody from camp saw me wandering around....
Actually I'm with you on going to the movies to see a really hot property. July or August feels about right. I'm looking forward to it.

Date: 2021-06-06 12:29 pm (UTC)By July 70% of the State should be vaccinated. That's a percentage I can handle.
Yeah, I've gotten lost on my way back from restrooms before - albeit not always in the woods. And not always with poor lighting as an excuse. I feel your pain. (Although willing to bet you weren't the only one.)
